The landscape of Ireland is surrounded by spectacular historical sites and monuments of national heritage, from the ruins of the stone age until the world’s largest castles of exceptional luxury.

Photography by sedoglia

History:

Let’s talk a little history, Ireland’s first settlers probably came from northern Britain 9,000 years ago. They went to the River Bann and probably settled at the foot of Mount Sandel, near Coleraine, County Londonderry. Neolithic farmers remained until about 2000 BC, when the Bronze Age began. The first Celts arrived around 500 BC.

When the Christians arrived, they tried to reshape the land of the pagans. Every county has monastic ruins, and the golden age of Christianity in Ireland can be seen in the misty monastery of St. Kevin at Glendalough, County Wicklow, the sixth-century monastic settlement on Devenish, County Fermanagh, and Clonmacnoise in River Shannon.

Historical sites to visit in Ireland:

Megalithic monument Newgrange

Older than the pyramids, the megalithic monument Newgrange in County Meath has been declared World Heritage by UNESCO. It was built around 3200BC, and it is a mound which occupies more than 400 meters and is surrounded by 97 stones that mark the site, some of them decorated with megalithic art.

The passage and tomb are designed to be illuminated by the sun during the summer solstice and winter.

Beaghmore Stones

In County Tyrone, dating from about 1500BC. The site consists of seven circular stones on which several theories have been proposed, including burials, ceremonial rituals and astronomical observations of lunar events, solar or stellar.

Great Mound at Knowth

The Great Mound at Knowth in County Meath is similar to nearby Newgrange, but was built around 5000 years ago. Access is a guided tour from the Visitor Center Bru na Bóinne, near the town of Conor. The visits are April to October.

Tower of Kells

This spectacular round tower that was built to protect against the Vikings, still stands, as well as parts of the original monastery, where the Book of Kells was created over a thousand years. The book is housed at Trinity College Dublin.

Source Navan

Navan Fort, County Armagh, was the seat of the Kings of Ulster and the ancient capital of the province. It has a circular earthwork encloses two monuments on top of the hill, a circular mound (funerary monument of the Iron Age) and a large mound. The Navan Centre explains these important monuments and offers visitors information on the varied history of the area.

Irish towns inherited from the past:

Irish towns are ancient monuments themselves. The old, narrow streets of Waterford are a map drawn by the Normans over a thousand years, while Dublin is a Viking site older than Stockholm or Oslo.

Bon voyage!

Texas Office Of Tourism

Governor Rick Perry today, at a press conference announcing a $675,000 Texas Enterprise Fund (TEF) investment in Tapco International, Inc., credited Texas’ low taxes, reasonable and predictable regulatory climate, educated workforce and investments through the TEF with helping attract jobs and businesses to the state.

The company is creating a new manufacturing facility in Baytown, which will create 100 jobs and generate an estimated $26 million in capital investment.

“Today, we break ground on a facility, part of TapcoEnpro’s capital investment in Baytown and Chambers County, that will soon be filled with workers producing equipment for our state’s vibrant energy sector,” said Gov. Perry. “Thanks to investments like the Texas Enterprise Fund, this new manufacturing facility will help enhance TapcoEnpro’s already strong reputation as producers of quality technology.”

“We are pleased that TapcoEnpro has chosen to build their new facility in Baytown, creating good jobs for Texans in this area,” said Roberto De Hoyos, director of the Texas Enterprise Fund.  “The Texas Enterprise Fund continues to attract great companies like this one to our state, and in turn, Texas continues to reap the benefits from their commitment to job creation which enriches the local and state economies.”

TapcoEnpro, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Curtiss-Wright Corp., designs and manufactures highly engineered, advanced technologies that perform critical functions in the defense, energy, commercial aerospace and general industrial markets.

The new facility will be used to build large vessels for the refining and petrochemical industries as well as support the production of large valve products, and will house some of the most modern machining and fabrication equipment available in the industry.

“The state’s investment through the Texas Enterprise Fund has helped bring us here to mark the start of construction on TapcoEnpro’s new manufacturing facility at Cedar Crossing,” Curtiss Wright Flow Control Vice President and General Manager Clif Jacobs said. “We have set a target to improve our competitive position significantly. When completed, our new heavy fabrication facility will provide the flexibility to grow into new markets, offer new products, increase our ability to bid competitively on large-scale refinery projects, and increase our global market share.”

“We at the City of Baytown are proud to partner with Chambers County and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development and Tourism in attracting the TapcoEnpro project to Cedar Crossing,” Baytown Mayor Steve DonCarlos said. “This innovative company is a perfect match for this location, and the project exemplifies the great value the Texas Enterprise Fund brings to our plans to grow this region.”

“The commissioners and I are very pleased that TapcoEnpro has chosen to expand in Chambers County. The company has a reputation for quality and cutting edge technology, and Chambers County is perfectly located to allow them to serve their customer base and to meet their goals in the most cost effective manner,” Chambers County Judge Jimmy Sylvia said. “I especially appreciate the support and involvement by the governor and his office of Economic Development and Tourism in convincing TapcoEnpro to build in Chambers County rather than some other state by leveraging local and state incentives, including the Texas Enterprise Fund.”

At Gov. Perry’s request, the legislature created the TEF in 2003 and re-appropriated funding in 2005, 2007 and 2009 to help ensure the growth of Texas businesses and create more jobs throughout the state.

TEF projects must be approved by the governor, lieutenant governor and speaker of the House.

The fund has since become one of the state’s most competitive tools to recruit and bolster business.

To date, the TEF has invested more than $408 million and closed the deal on projects generating more than 53,600 new jobs and more than $14.4 billion in capital investment in the state.

Tuesday, Judge Kerry P. Fitzgerald of the 5th District Court of Appeals in Dallas rejected a lower court decision that two gay men who were married in Massachusetts held the right to divorce in Texas. In October, 2009 District Judge Tena Callahan ruled the men could divorce in the state and that the Texas prohibition against same sex marriage violates the federal constitutional right to equal protection. Today, Callahan was ordered to dismiss the case, Fitzgerald writing “We hold that Texas district courts do not have subject-matter jurisdiction to hear a same-sex divorce case.” Attorney General Greg Abbot, a Republican who intervened following Callahan’s verdict, released a statement Tuesday saying “Today’s court of appeals decision overruled the district court’s improper ruling, confirmed the constitutionally of Texas’ traditional definition of marriage and correctly found that Texas courts lack the legal authority to grant divorces to same-sex couples.” The two men, who were wed in 2006 and are natives of Dallas, separated in 2008 and filed for divorce citing “discord or conflict of personalities.”

The Pacific Justice Institute, a conservative non-profit legal defence organization, filed a lawsuit late Monday with the 3rd District Court of Appeal in Sacramento, California on behalf of Doctor Joshua Beckley requesting that Governor Schwarzenegger and Attorney General Jerry Brown appeal the ruling by United States District Judge Vaughn Walker that struck down the state’s gay marriage ban, Proposition 8. Beckley is the senior minister at the Ecclesia Christian Fellowship in San Bernardino, California. The emergency order includes a declaration of support from former United States Attorney General Edwin Meese, who served Ronald Regan as president and as governor of California, acting as legal advisor. He wrote that “Governor Regan never refused or declined to defend a state law or state constitution provision, regardless of his own opposition or dislike for a challenged provision. As attorney general, I never refused or decline to defend a law on the basis that I disagreed with the law as matter of policy,” a statement which in fact not true. Attorney General Brown released a statement Tuesday reiterating his refusal to challenge Walker’s ruling, a spokesperson saying “The attorney general does not believe that he can be forced to prosecute an appeal of a decision with which he agrees.”

Toronto will host the first Canadian gay tourism conference, industry professionals and analysts gathering November 5th to discuss marketing Canada as a destination spot for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered tourists.

A look at the unofficial college football portraits, the ones that tread well into homo-erotic territory, the pictures dating back decades, “Colts quarterback Peyton Manning says that when he played for Tennessee in the mid ‘90s, a spot in the front row was a ‘pride thing,’ and he and his teammates would arrive to the weight room as early as they could on photo day to do enough lifts and push-ups to make their muscles bulge. ’There was a lot of baby oil involved,’ recalls Manning. ‘It helps with muscle definition.’” Baby oil, bulges, pride thing? Where are those pictures?

UPDATED: Numbers reported in this news release may have caused some confusion. The reported July 2010 ridership of nearly 25,000 for the second train was not measuring only passengers traveling to and from Vancouver, B.C. Total ridership measures all passengers aboard a train regardless of where they depart or arrive. The second train to Vancouver, B.C., includes the northbound train #516 and the southbound train #513.

OLYMPIA – After one year in operation, the second Amtrak Cascades train to Vancouver, B.C., has topped its ridership expectations and recorded its best month in July, with nearly 25,000 passengers.

To encourage even greater ridership between the state of Washington and British Columbia, travelers will be offered a 25 percent ticket discount on Amtrak Cascades travel to Vancouver, B.C. during the month of September.

Gov. Chris Gregoire and B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell both credit the partnership between Washington and British Columbia, as well as support from tourism agencies and other local and regional partners, for the success of the second train that provides another option for cross-border travel.

“Amtrak Cascades has proven to be a successful transit option and is growing in popularity,” said Gregoire. “The bonds between Washington and our neighbors up north in British Columbia are strong and built upon a long history of friendship and collaboration. Having a viable travel option connecting our communities is important for both of our economies, strengthening trade and tourism between the two nations.”

From the day service began Aug. 19, 2009, through July 31, ridership for the second Amtrak Cascades train has totaled more than 221,000. Ridership on the original train to Vancouver, B.C., has also increased dramatically, up over 21 percent compared to 2009.

“The addition of a second train between Washington state and Vancouver has proven to be a tremendous success,” said Premier Campbell. “The Amtrak Cascades train enhances tourism between our communities and helps to create jobs at both ends of the line.”

The second daily Amtrak Cascades train is currently being operated as a pilot program through September 2010, with proposed plans for the service to continue if the Canada Border Services Agency decides to allow the train to pass without additional security fees.

“The increased number of passengers on this additional Amtrak Cascades service proves that passenger rail is a valuable transportation option and we will continue our commitment to growing the service through this high-speed corridor”, said Washington Transportation Secretary Paula Hammond.

"Our government has worked extremely hard with the Washington State Department of Transportation to ensure that the second Amtrak Cascades train is successful and continues in the years ahead,” said B.C. Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Shirley Bond. “The growing demand and ridership provides a compelling reason for this enhanced service to continue and for us to further strengthen our partnership related to Washington and other transportation initiatives.”

To take advantage of the popular Amtrak Cascades service and reach more potential customers, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), the Province of British Columbia, Tourism Vancouver and the Vancouver Attractions Group are working together on a marketing effort. During the month of September, travelers will be able to enjoy a 25 percent discount on Amtrak Cascades fares to Vancouver, B.C. Tourism Vancouver and the Vancouver Attractions Group are also offering exclusive discounts on Vancouver attractions for Amtrak Cascades passengers. Details and booking information is available at www.tourismvancouver.com/visitors/amtrak.

Amtrak Cascades operates four daily round trips between Portland and Seattle; one daily round trip between Seattle and Vancouver, B.C., and one between Portland and Vancouver, B.C.; and daily service between Eugene and Seattle, via Portland. Amtrak Cascades is operated by Amtrak in partnership with the Washington and Oregon Departments of Transportation. For Amtrak Cascades fares and schedules, visit AmtrakCascades.com.
